Musings from Rabbi Dan

I have begun a new way of keeping in touch. I plan on posting a musing on the weeks that we do not have services. These musings may be about the Torah portion, it could be about something that has happened during the week, or it could be about something else. I will send the note to all and if you want to continue reading you will be provided a link to the Kol Ami web page.  Click here for the July 30th “musing.”

2010-11 Religious School Kickoff Picnic and School Forms

Welcome Back - Our first day back will be Sunday, August 29th.  School will resume with a fantastic Kick-off event at Pinecliff Park.  Pinecliff Park - Shelters 3 & 4,8350 Pinecliff Park Rd., Frederick, MD. Take I-70 to Exit #55 to South St.  At the traffic light, turn left onto Reich's Ford Rd. Proceed 1 1/2 miles, just after crossing the Monocacy River bridge turn left onto Pinecliff Park Rd.  Park is at the end of the road.

School will begin at 10 am for all grades.  Students will be divided by class and will participate in mix of fun activities that will help them start the year off right.  Please read this information carefully! Mitzvah opportunity:  As many of you know, we have mitzvah opportunities throughout the year.  During the High Holiday season, we have a non-perishable food drive to help stock the local food bank.  Helping alleviate hunger is an idea that even our youngest students can understand easily.  Bring at least 1 item to the kick off; we'd like to see a big pile and to help make a difference.  Dress appropriately for the park:  sneakers, sunscreen, hats, clothes that can get dirty.  Please help your child make good choices on this front.  You do not need to bring your school supplies to the park. This is a Family Day!  Rabbi Dan and I will be holding a Parent orientation so plan to stay and attend.   At the conclusion of the program, we will picnic and get a chance to socialize.  Kol Ami will provide drinks and dessert.  Each family should bring a bag lunch for each person.  If you require refrigeration, then please bring your own cooler as well.    Kol Ami's policy:  food at Kol Ami events should be served Kosher-style out of respect for historic tradition.  We do not require Hekshers (kosher certification symbols).  Please do not bring food that is considered forbidden (traif) to Kol Ami events.  Practically speaking, ham and cheese is not the sandwich to pack for the picnic.  If you have questions on this subject, Rabbi Sikowitz is always happy to discuss these traditions and your personal thoughts.
